ABBEVILLE — SpaceX is building a massive maritime shipping complex off Louisiana's Gulf Coast, set to include docking facilities, access roads and extensive cargo-handling areas, The Center Square reports.

The shipping complex will supplement SpaceX's Starbase Louisiana development in Vermillion Parish. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said that the Starbase facility will be the "biggest launch site on earth" when it finishes construction. If all goes according to plan, the facility's first launch will happen in 2029.

The shipping complex would establish a new industrial shipping hub along Freshwater Bayou, connecting facilities on the Gulf to inland waterways through a network of roads and shipping channels, Center Square reports.

SpaceX's proposed infrastructure would include approximately 3,500 feet of space where ships could dock to load and unload large cargo, with plans also calling for inland docking facilities connected to existing navigation channels, along with approximately 15.5 miles of heavy-haul roads and more than a mile of elevated roadway.

The development, if it goes forward, will be privately financed and would accommodate vessels beyond those operated by SpaceX. The SpaceX project in Vermillion Parish is set to cost $100 billion.
