CDC: Louisiana emerges as only state with 'high' flu activity amid early seasonal surge
BATON ROUGE — Louisiana is seeing an early and aggressive wave of flu infections, becoming the lone state in the nation reporting "High" influenza-like illness activity on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s surveillance map.
According to the latest data from the CDC’s Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report (FluView), most jurisdictions nationwide are currently logging minimal or low outpatient respiratory illness activity.
The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), which tracks seasonal trends through its respiratory virus surveillance network, noted elevated emergency department visits and rising percent-positivity rates for influenza statewide.
Public health specialists attribute the state’s early vulnerability to a combination of circulating strains—predominantly Influenza A—alongside historically lower adult vaccination coverage and pockets of limited access to care.

State and federal health authorities urge residents aged six months and older to receive an annual flu vaccine as soon as possible. Because the vaccine takes roughly two weeks to reach peak protection, officials stress that early immunization, frequent handwashing and staying home when symptomatic remain the best defenses to curb spread and ease the strain on local healthcare facilities.
