COVINGTON — A 14-year-old student was arrested after a fight that led to a school resource officer being elbowed in the face and a teacher being hospitalized, according to deputies.

The St. Tammany Parish said that around 11 a.m. on Friday, a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's School Resource Officer was made aware of an altercation happening in the school's cafeteria.

While attempting to break up the fight, deputies say the SRO was elbowed in the face, and four teachers were kicked or hit. One teacher was hospitalized for her injuries. Deputies say the SRO identified a 14-year-old male student as the aggressor and he was taken into custody.

The juvenile was arrested and booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on multiple counts of battery of a school teacher, one count of battery of a school teacher; injury required medical attention, simple assault and resisting a police officer.

The school was placed on temporary lockdown during the incident; the lockdown was lifted when there was no ongoing threat to students of staff.

"Violence of any kind will not be tolerated in our schools,” Sheriff Bret Ibert said. “Our students, teachers and staff deserve a safe environment to learn and work, and anyone who chooses to disrupt that environment with violence will be held accountable.”
