BATON ROUGE — One day after being indicted on charges connected to the April shooting at the Mall of Louisiana that killed a 17-year-old, Markel Lee pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges.

Lee, now 18, was indicted Wednesday on one count of second-degree murder, six counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of illegal use of weapons. On Thursday, he pleaded not guilty.

Lee is due back in court on Nov. 4 for a motion hearing.

Lee was initially arrested a day after the April 24 mass shooting that killed Martha Odom. Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse said in July that Lee would be the sole arrestee in the shooting.

In an arrest affidavit, police said two groups of men could be seen on security footage approaching each other near the mall food court before people started running and blood could be seen on the floor. Lee could allegedly be seen running toward the bathrooms while pointing a pistol toward the food court, where blood spatter and bullet holes were found.

Odom, a high school student from Lafayette, was fatally shot. She and two classmates, who were also shot but survived, were visiting the mall for "Senior Skip Day." Local soccer player Donnie Guillory was also injured in the shooting.
