BATON ROUGE — A suspect accused of killing a 29-year-old along Byron Street has been arrested, Baton Rouge Police said Friday.

According to BRPD, 28-year-old Darren Cooks was arrested on first-degree murder charges Thursday following the fatal Oct. 10 shooting of 29-year-old Jaymirus Stewart.

According to arrest records, Stewart was making a transaction with another person in a car along Byron Street when shots were fired from inside the vehicle, striking Stewart. The driver of the car drove away, with Stewart still hanging out of the window.

Stewart then fell to the ground and tried to get away, but collapsed near a home along the street.

Cooks was then developed as a suspect and located by the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force on Thursday. Cooks led agents on a brief vehicle pursuit before entering an occupied home on Fairwoods Drive. The owners of the house ran out, with one person still inside.

Cooks asked if he could hide in their attic, police wrote, instructing the occupant, whom he did not know, "not to speak to the police." The remaining occupant then left the house while Cooks hid, police add.

Cooks was then booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison after Marshals took him into custody.
