HAMMOND - A hardware store in Hammond opened to the public on Sunday, one day after a truck crashed through the walls of the facility over the weekend.

The owners of Pennington True Value told WBRZ they did not expect a truck to crash through the front of the building in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"I didn't think it would be inside-inside the building. I was just thinking they had hit the building," Co-owner Marie Pennington said.

After years of serving others and helping them recover during unexpected events, the owners of the hardware store found themselves being the ones assisted over the weekend.

"Disasters, floods, different things, we just want to be here. We're close to people's homes, we want to be here to serve," Pennington said.

The truck left scorch marks and tire tracks burned into the store's concrete floors, plowing through four aisles in the store and the area where cashiers check out customers. As soon as the call regarding the crash came in, Pennington said friends, family and employees rushed to the store and went to work.

"Everybody just jumps in. You don't even have to say anything. They just stay and help you," she said. "It's been very humbling."

Pennington also shared that police arrested one person for the crash. WBRZ reached out to Hammond Police for confirmation and is waiting for an answer.
