BATON ROUGE - A student at Progress Elementary may have handed out pieces of a banned substance to classmates during lunch, according to a letter the East Baton Rouge School Board sent home to parents.  

The letter, dated Aug. 25, said school administration learned of the situation the same day it happened.  An unknown number of students ingested the substance and alerted the administration after at least one became sick.  

The school drug task force is conducting a full investigation into the matter.The student involved will be disciplined in accordance with the student rights and responsibilities handbook, according to the letter.

School officials are asking parents to speak with their children about the dangers of drugs, gummies, and unknown substances and the importance of never accepting or consuming anything unknown or that could be harmful.
