BATON ROUGE — Two people, including a Southern University student, accused in connection with a shooting that left one person injured have been arrested by Baton Rouge Police.

BRPD and the Southern University Police Department responded to a shooting on Southern University's campus around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Detectives learned that a Southern University student was hospitalized after being hit in the chest by a bullet.

BRPD added that the shooting happened while a group was gathered around a vehicle near University Apartments, upperclassman housing along Harding Boulevard.

It was later learned that Jiqueze Dillon had a gun and handed it to Robert Washington, a Southern student. While exchanging the gun, Washington accidentally fired it, striking the victim.

Dillon, who did not attend Southern, admitted to having the gun on campus. Neither Dillon nor Washington has a criminal history.

Dillon and Washington, both 19, were charged with carrying a firearm on campus, with Washington also charged with negligent injury. They were both booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Monday evening.

The gunshot victim is expected to survive, BRPD added.
