BATON ROUGE — Two people were arrested for cruelty to the elderly following the death of a 74-year-old woman on Friday, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office. 

Deputies responded to a call for a deceased person at a residence along Shady Bluff Drive on Thursday, according to arrest records, where they located a deceased 74-year-old woman. 

Deputies noted that the woman, who was only clothed in a severely soiled diaper and a red shirt at the time, had a large bed sore on her back that exposed multiple bones and tissue, leading them to believe that she was malnourished. 

During the investigation, it was learned that the woman had previously suffered a stroke about four years prior and has been partially bedridden since. While executing a search warrant, investigators noted that the residence had little to no food, with animal urine and feces located throughout the residence. 

A reclining sectional sofa that the 74-year-old woman allegedly slept on also appeared to be covered in human urine and feces, according to arrest records. 

Investigators learned that 42-year-old Heidi Trahan and 43-year-old Justin Bueche lived with the elderly woman for about five years and that the pair rarely left the residence during that time, according to Trahan.

Bueche allegedly told deputies that the elderly woman had become bedridden about two months prior and could not move from the couch. He allegedly called a local hospital on Sept. 17 to receive guidance on how to treat open sores that he noticed on the woman's body and was told that the woman needed to be transported to the hospital.

Deputies said that neither Bueche nor Trahan sought any additional medical attention following the phone call. 

While Trahan allegedly told deputies that she was the main caregiver for bathing the elderly woman and changing her clothes, the pair found the woman soaked in urine and feces on multiple occasions. The duo later admitted to only changing the woman's diapers "maybe once or twice a day," according to arrest records. 

Trahan and Bueche were arrested for second-degree cruelty to the elderly and persons with infirmities. 

The situation remains under investigation.
