Ascension Parish sheriff finds car but still searching for hit-and-run driver
ASCENSION PARISH — A 22-year-old woman is recovering from a broken neck and fractured skull after a driver hit her outside her home and left the scene last weekend.
Makayla White had just walked out of her home on Dutchtown Lane to pick up a food delivery when she was hit. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said the family's home surveillance camera caught the hit-and-run.
White woke up in the hospital two days after the hit-and-run. Even as her bones heal, she is expected to live with permanent scars.
"Miserable," White said when asked what she was feeling.
Her mother, Jessica White, said she has never seen someone survive something like this. "I've never seen someone walk away like this in my life. They're usually much worse or not even living," Jessica said.
"A walking miracle. She's my miracle girl," Jessica said.
Before the hit-and-run, White was training to become a pharmacy technician. "I count medications. I make sure to give the right medications. I ID everybody," White said.

Ascension Parish Sheriff Donald Capello spoke out, asking the public for help identifying the driver. "As of yesterday, we located the vehicle, the suspect's vehicle, but we still don't have — we haven't identified a driver yet," Capello said.
Investigators say it is likely the driver, once found, will be charged with felony hit-and-run.
Jessica described her daughter as someone who brings light to any situation.
"She'll bring the light to any situation — she'll bring happiness and laughter. She's a jokester, and she just loves people to smile, and she loves her community," she said.
