BATON ROUGE — A toddler seen wandering Tigerland early Monday morning was taken into the care of the state Department of Children and Family Services, Baton Rouge Police said. 

BRPD was notified of the 2-year-old boy along Alvin Dark Avenue around 2 a.m.

DCFS spokesperson Lester Duhé said the child was found wandering around in front of a store wearing only a diaper. DCFS took custody of the boy through a court order and placed him in a foster home after his family could not immediately be located.

DCFS eventually located the child's mother later in the day, Duhé said, and the department is "assessing her protective capacities."

“I want to thank our dedicated DCFS child protective service investigators who immediately stepped in to help this child in the middle of the night. We are working closely with the Baton Rouge Police Department as they investigate this case. In the meantime, our top priority is making sure this child is safe and cared for while we determine the next steps,” DCFS Secretary Rebecca Harris said in a statement.
