BATON ROUGE — Southern University will be conducting a scheduled partial campus power outage on Saturday as the school works to "stabilize and improve the electrical distribution system."

The outage will be localized to academic buildings, the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union, F.G. Clark Activity Center, and Bethune, Grandison, Reed and White residence halls. Other campus facilities are not expected to be affected by this scheduled outage, officials said. 

Temporary generators will provide electrical service to Bethune, Grandison, Reed and White halls during the outage. Once installation and required safety inspections are complete, Southern will coordinate with Entergy to restore service and verify power to the affected facilities.

The outage will last from 8 a.m. to around 9 p.m. The affected areas are expected to be fully operational by Sunday.

"The outage is necessary to safely install and transition electrical service to rental switchgear, which will provide a more reliable interim power configuration while the University continues planning for permanent improvements to the campus electrical system," officials said Thursday.

The outage comes after several days of power outages on campus forced operations to go remote.
