Overgrown canal near LSU scheduled for maintenance following report
BATON ROUGE — A drainage canal along Aster Street near LSU's campus, overgrown with thick vegetation and filled with trash, is scheduled for a cleanup at the end of the month, according to officials.
Known as the LSU Canal, the open-channel waterway runs east from Aster Street behind Baton Rouge Fire Station 11, connecting to Corporation Canal before flowing south into Bayou Duplantier.
Marie Constantine of the Louisiana Stormwater Coalition noted that heavy vegetation indicates significant sediment accumulation, which restricts the canal's water flow and reduces its overall drainage capacity.
Following a report by WBRZ, East Baton Rouge's Drainage Maintenance team conducted an inspection of the canal where they identified the vegetation and cleanup work needed at the location.
