BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Department of Health partnered with Southern University to expand its suicide prevention training throughout the state on Friday. 

Through a three-year contract, the expanded program is designed to help residents recognize risks and expand the capacity for mental health professionals, first responders, law enforcement, educators, service members, veterans and faith-based leaders. 

"By equipping people with the knowledge and tools to recognize warning signs and connect individuals to appropriate resources, we have an opportunity to make a meaningful and potentially life-saving difference,” said John K. Pierre, chancellor of Southern University and A&M College. 

According to the Louisiana Department of Health, suicide is the third leading cause of death for ages 10 to 24 and ages 25 to 34 in the state of Louisiana. 

Southern University has previously provided suicide and mental health education through the establishment of the Louisiana Center for Prevention Resources at the Nelson Mandela College of Government and Social Sciences, Department of Psychology. The center offers free statewide virtual and online courses.

Next month, both the university and the Louisiana Department of Health will come together to celebrate 988 Day, a national initiative to bring awareness to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
