PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - For the first time in the Marshall Faulk era, the Southern Jaguars have a SWAC win. The Jags beat the Prairie View A&M Panthers 28-14 to move to 3-4 on the season with a 1-2 conference record.

After missing last week's game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff for what head coach Marshall Faulk describes as "conduct detrimental to the team", starting Quarterback Christian Johnson and running back Mike Franklin both played against Prairie View A&M.

Southern got the first score of the afternoon on a 69-yard touchdown from Johnson to freshman wide receiver Damien Henderson Jr. The Panthers responded in the second quarter with a five-yard rushing touchdown by Chase Bingmon.

The Southern defense made its share of plays in the first half, with two forced turnovers. Jags safety Herman Brister III reeled in a pick in the second quarter, and the Jags' defensive front forced a fumble on their own goal line to keep Prairie View A&M out of the end zone. Jags safety Ty Lee recovered the fumble just in front of Southern's goal line.

Prairie View A&M started the second with a quick score to take the lead, but the second TD connection from Johnson and Henderson in the second half tied the game at 14. Later in the fourth quarter, Jags running back Trey Holly finally broke free for a 30-yard touchdown to give the Jags a 21-14 lead.

The icing on the cake came courtesy of Brister, who picked off Panthers QB Tevin Carter for his second pick of the night and returned it for a 47-yard pick six. The Jags got the win 28-14.

In total, the Panthers turned the ball over four times, and the Jags didn't turn it over once.

Southern has a bye next week. Their next game isn't until Saturday, Oct. 24, against Texas Southern.
