BATON ROUGE — The speed limit on Nicholson Drive has been lowered from 45 to 35 m.p.h. following a crash that killed an LSU student and her fiancé, according to Department of Transportation and Development officials.

The change affects the stretch of road between Brightside Drive and Bob Pettit Boulevard near Tigerland and went into effect on Wednesday. Rodney Mallett, a DOTD spokesperson, confirmed the change Thursday.

The speed limit change includes the area where Leah Fonte, 21, and her fiancé, Shane Hirstius, 21, were struck and killed on Sunday, Oct. 18.
