BATON ROUGE — A shooting in the Scotlandville area raised some security concerns heading into the rest of Southern University's homecoming week.

Southern University's homecoming week is one of the biggest annual events for the Scotlandville community, drawing nearly 100,000 people to the Bluff. The annual event, rooted in pride and tradition, brings Southern students, alumni and the Scotlandville community together.

Sunday afternoon, a shooting happened on Osprey and Kingfisher Avenues, just a block away from the homecoming parade route shortly after the parade wrapped up.

WBRZ asked if any arrests have been made, but has not heard back from BRPD.

The shooting was not on campus and was not directly tied to the university, but its proximity to the festivities prompted concern among some students.

"Our campus is so open and it's easy access for anybody. So I feel like security is definitely important because you don't know who all is coming on campus," Taylor said.

Metro Councilman Anthony Kenney Jr., a Southern alumnus who represents the district where Southern is located, said safety is a priority for the rest of the week.

"We'll coordinate with city-parish officials, university leadership, BRPD, public safety to make sure this is a safe, but fun homecoming weekend," Kenney said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies will be present for the remainder of the week, including at the homecoming game. Authorities are also placing cameras and license plate readers on and near campus.

"Obviously police can't see everything," Kenney said. "But those cameras are strategically placed to make sure we have this perimeter very surveilled to make sure if a crime does happen, that we have the right footage and evidence to know who the perpetrators of those crimes are as well."

The homecoming game is Saturday at 6 p.m. against Arkansas Pine Bluff in A.W. Mumford Stadium.
