Vacant North Street charter school catches fire; more than 80 BRFD firefighters respond

BATON ROUGE — A vacant building that once housed Children's Charter School along North Street caught fire early Tuesday morning.

Baton Rouge Fire spokesman Billy Zachary said that crews first responded to the fire at the corner of North and North 12th streets at 1:10 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, the building was "fully engulfed."

Zachary said that "it took a second" to understand the scale of the fire, but eventually more than 80 BRFD fire personnel were deployed to the scene and began a "coordinated effort to put a lot of water on it."

Flames subsided by 6:30 a.m., but the fire was still not under control, with hot spots still present within the walls of the abandoned school, Zachary continued.

No one was injured in the fire, with BRFD investigators working to determine what caused the total-loss fire.
