BATON ROUGE —

Residents woke up Wednesday morning to find St. Katherine Avenue and nearby streets flooded.

According to residents, a car struck a fire hydrant near the corner of St. Katherine Avenue and Hammond Street earlier this week.

Baton Rouge Water said it was notified of the damage Monday and sent crews to assess the situation. The utility also contacted Louisiana 811 before repairs could begin. However, the hydrant began flooding the area before those repairs were completed.

Residents told WBRZ the flooding disrupted water service, leaving some unable to even flush their toilets.

By around 1 p.m. Wednesday, Baton Rouge Water crews were wading through deep water and using pumps as they worked to remove the floodwater and repair the damaged hydrant.

The hydrant has since been repaired, and the flooding has been brought under control.
