Local volunteer group Cajun Navy 2016 heads to Florida for Hurricane Isaias recovery

BATON ROUGE — A Louisiana volunteer group is heading to Florida to help with recovery efforts after Hurricane Isaias made landfall as a Category 2 storm.

High winds and flooded streets left significant property damage across the region. The Louisiana-based volunteer group is bringing hands-on experience, essential supplies and home-cooked meals to assist with clearing debris and supporting residents.

"We have a trailer filled with heavy equipment so we can actually go in and pull trees off of land, chop it up, move it," Communications Director Trey Williams said. "Also remove any type of debris."

Williams said the team formed after floods devastated southeastern Louisiana in 2016. Since then, Cajun Navy 2016 has expanded its rescue and recovery operations across Texas and neighboring states.

As they approach their 10th anniversary, volunteers say their mission to help disaster-impacted communities remains as strong as ever, no matter where the work takes them.

"We came together, neighbors helping neighbors... so that's what we want to do is we want to go and help our neighbors. And this time we're heading to help our neighbors down in Florida."

Williams said the team will stay as long as they need to, with additional volunteers on standby to help.
