Future home of Greater Baton Rouge fair still uncertain

SAINT GEORGE - The future location of the Greater Baton Rouge Fair remains uncertain, as plans for a sports complex in St. George could force the event to move.
The fair has been held at the Airline Highway fairgrounds since 1973. Fair officials said earlier this year that the event could move to Baker and the former Woody Dumas Golf Course, but they have not secured the location.
"Nothing has been locked in yet," said Cliff Barton, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair.
Barton said the golf course is the main location being discussed, but meetings will take place after the fair to look at that option.
He said they also need to talk to St. George officials about what will happen with the current property. Barton said if redevelopment does not happen, the fair could possibly stay at its current location.
For Spark Theory Permanent Jewelry, this year is their first time taking part in the state fair.
"It's been good," said Tina Lanoux, owner of Spark Theory Permanent Jewelry. "Thursday night, the opening night, it was nonstop. We looked up, and it was 11 o'clock."
Lanoux hopes the fair can remain in St. George for now.
"St. George is a new city, so I'm hoping that they're not ready to stop the fair yet. I know this is bringing income to St. George," Lanoux said.
The Greater Baton Rouge Fair is a decades-old event that brings families together for rides, games and food. This year's fair ends on Sunday, Nov. 1.
