BATON ROUGE — Running back Champ Davis and defensive end Ckelby Givens practiced with the rest of the Jaguars as Southern prepares for its third trip to Houston this season for an early afternoon matchup against Texas Southern.
Head coach Marshall Faulk said Tuesday that both players were active at practice, but that it is still up in the air whether they will play against the Tigers on Saturday.
Faulk said that for Davis, it is up to how he is feeling about playing following an AC sprain, while the decision to allow Givens to play will be made by the team doctor's assessment of the status of his recovery following a concussion.
The Jaguars are 3-4 following Oct. 10's win over Prairie View A&M, their first conference win of the season.
"Right now we're in control of our own destiny, and that's where you wanna be," Faulk added, noting that he wants to see the team handle victories in bite-sized chunks and focus on winning each day, each practice and each play as they come.
The Jags followed the win with a bye week. Faulk said that the team "had a really good practice" after the bye.
Faulk said that, during the break in the season, there was a lot of "self-scouting," which he said involved breaking down both their own and Texas Southern's strengths and weaknesses on the field.
"We need to make sure we have readiness and preparedness to take on TSU," Faulk said.
The Jags will play Texas Southern, who have a 1-5 overall record and a 0-3 record in conference play, in Houston's Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m.
