NEW ORLEANS — A fun house on Frenchmen Street is giving visitors a chance to step inside the artwork rather than simply look at it.

JAMNOLA, located at 940 Frenchmen St., brings together more than 100 local artists and creative collaborators, each offering their own interpretation of New Orleans.

"JAMNOLA stands for joy, art, music, New Orleans, Louisiana," manager of guest experiences Stacie Davis said.

The experience features dozens of immersive installations, with each space offering something different to discover. Rather than displaying artwork on a wall, the artists create entire environments for visitors to explore.

"We have over a hundred local artists, and it's their vision of the joy and magic of New Orleans," Davis said.

Some rooms are built around a specific artist's personal passion.

"’Down the Drain,’ for example, Jeremy Payton's jam is puzzles, so the room not only celebrates New Orleans but it celebrates his love for puzzles," Davis said. "And then in ‘GUTS!’, Ursa Eyer is the artist and her jam is turning trash into treasure."

The exhibits also celebrate people and traditions that have helped shape the city. The ‘Garden of Legends’ features sculptures honoring New Orleans figures, including jazz legend Louis Armstrong and rapper Lil Wayne.

Elsewhere, vinyl records are transformed into flowers and visitors can explore the Fountain of You or take photos inside a bathtub featuring a giant crawfish.

The idea for JAMNOLA came after co-owners Jonny Liss and Chad Smith visited the Museum of Ice Cream, one of the early immersive art experiences.

"This light bulb went off, which was bringing joy through large doses of art and music," Liss said. "We wanted it to be a fun house, but the most important thing is you learn something about the culture of our city while you're here.”
