BATON ROUGE — One person is dead after a crash between a dump truck and a sedan on Scenic Highway near Thomas Road, officials said Friday.

Officials identified the man as 44-year-old Leandrew Coates of Zachary.

Louisiana State Police said around 6:30 a.m. a 2003 Nissan, driven by Coates, was traveling southbound on U.S. 61 at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a Mack dump truck was traveling Northbound and making a left turn into a private drive. As a result, the Nissan collided with the passenger side of the Mack dump truck.

Troopers say Coates was driving unrestrained and was pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment was not a suspected factor in this crash, officials said. 

BRPD responded to the scene before handing the investigation of the crash over to Louisiana State Police.
