An unsettled weather pattern will continue across the Baton Rouge Area through this weekend, bringing relief from summer heat but ongoing humidity and increased rain. Near record moisture in the atmosphere will make it easier for the rain to fall heavily at times, especially south and east of Baton Rouge.

Rounds of Showers & T-Storms: persist through the weekend, not a constant rain

Weekend Plans: can work around the stormy weather, take ponchos and rain boots

Flooding: not major, nuisance issues in low-lying areas

High School &  College Football

Friday Night: Fans heading out to high school games Friday evening should take some rain gear as a precaution. Though trending down, some leftover showers may linger into the evening, but all games will be able to play and finish. Temperatures will fall out of the 80s into the upper 70s.

Saturday (LSU & Southern): If you are spending several hours on either campus Saturday, rain gear and shoes you don’t mind getting wet or muddy are a must! It will not rain all day, but the threat of off-and-on showers and thunderstorms will persist. A stray thunderstorm could feasibly cause a game delay but those chances are low as lightning activity will diminish into the evening. Still, rain or drizzle will remain possible, so take a poncho into the stadium. On the other hand, the day won’t be as hot as previous games due to clouds and showers, but it will be very humid. After starting the day in the mid 70s, highs will top out in the mid 80s before drifting down after sunset.

• Rain Coverage: Rain coverage jumps to 90% Saturday and 80% Sunday, meaning many locations will get rain at some point each day. Rain is expected to come in rounds, so neither day will be a total washout, and dry time will be available.

• Rain Totals: Most of the Capital Area can expect 1 to 4 inches of rain through Sunday. Relative to Baton Rouge, the lower amounts are expected north and west and higher amounts are expected south and east, especially near the coast.

• Flood Concerns: Beyond the baseline rain totals, isolated intense rainfall rates could happen in small point locations during thunderstorms. Rain coming down that fast would lead to water ponding on roads and localized flash flooding in low-lying spots or underpasses. Local rivers and bayous are currently very low, meaning they have plenty of room to absorb runoff.

Up Next: On Sunday, a slow moving front will drift south through the region. Ample cloud cover is anticipated and some showers are expected to continue. If the front moves a little quicker, showers may taper from north to south through the day. By Monday, this trend will be more noticeable as showers and humidity lessen. Tuesday through Friday will then be much more seasonable with highs in the mid 80s, lows in the mid 60s and a mix of sun and clouds.

The Tropics: The Atlantic Basin remains quiet as far as Louisiana is concerned. The remnants of former Tropical Storm Fay sit several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda and face strong upper-level winds alongside dry air. The National Hurricane Center gives this system only a 10% chance of development over the next seven days, and it poses zero threat to the Gulf Coast.
