BATON ROUGE — Drones are banned over and around Tiger Stadium during all LSU home football games this season, according to a joint announcement from several law enforcement agencies.

The East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney's Office, along with the Louisiana State Police, LSU Police Department and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, say the restriction is in effect from one hour before kickoff until one hour after each game ends.

The ban is enforced under both federal aviation law and Louisiana state law. The Federal Aviation Administration enforces temporary flight restrictions for all NCAA Division I football games, prohibiting drone and model aircraft operations within a 3 nautical mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above ground level around stadiums with a seating capacity of 30,000 or more.

Louisiana law also gives law enforcement the authority to act against drones operating unlawfully near events like LSU home games. That includes using detection and tracking methods as well as intercepting or disabling a drone through jamming, hacking or physical capture.

Officers can take those steps when there is reasonable suspicion that a drone is involved in criminal activity, poses a threat to public safety or is operating in violation of state or federal law. A drone flown unlawfully in the restricted zone can also be seized as a criminal instrument under state law.

Anyone caught flying a drone in violation of the restriction could be ticketed or arrested. A conviction can bring a fine of up to $4,000, up to two years in prison or both, along with forfeiture of the drone.

The East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney's Office said it will pursue criminal prosecution against anyone who unlawfully operates a drone in violation of these restrictions. People can visit tfr.faa.gov to view flight restrictions.
