GONZALES — Ascension Parish voters have decided to leave in place a salary cap for members of government leaders.

Voters were asked to remove language from the parish Home Rule Charter that specified the members of its governing authority could not receive more money that the maximum amount allowed for police jurors.

Under state law, police juries that elect to set salaries can be compensated no more than $1,600 a month, or a total of $19,200 annually. Police jury presidents are allowed up to $24,000.

The amendment did not include language dictating a maximum or a minimum.

Also, in Sorrento, four Democrats and three Republicans sought five at-large council seats. Four incumbents won, and the fifth failed by one vote.

Re-elected were Wanda LeBlanc Bourgeois, Duane Humprey, Randy Anny and Chad Domingue. Patti Melancon Poche won 114 votes while incumbent Darnell Gilbert took 113 in the race for the fifth spot.

Bourgeois and Domingue are Republicans and the others are Democrats.
